Job Title:              Family and Consumer Science Teacher - Textiles/Fashion

Department:        Instruction

Reports to:          Director of Career Education

Summary

To develop in each pupil an awareness of the importance of a good home environment as a basis for satisfactory home and family living; to motivate each pupil to acquire competencies, knowledge, and skills relating to clothing and textiles, consumer education, family relations, safety, home decoration, and household equipment; to discover and develop special talents of pupils in FACS fields.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required.   1. Teaches concepts and skills in clothing and textiles, home management, family relationships, and consumer education to secondary and post-secondary pupils, utilizing courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  3. Organizes class activities so that preparation, instruction or laboratory work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within the allotted class time.
  4. Demonstrates skill techniques in FACS and prepares appropriate instructional aides and display materials to enhance learning.
  5. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  6. Instruct pupils in use, care, and safe operation of household equipment and appliances. Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required. 
  7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the laboratory-type classroom.
  8. Evaluate each pupil’s progress in concepts and skills of the subject taught and contribution to a group project or goal.
  9. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aides, and equipment; maintains required inventory records; purchases supplies as authorized.
  10. Encourages pupils to demonstrate learned techniques at home with their families.
  11. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress. 
  12. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members to help pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  13. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  14. Participates in curriculum development and modification as well as other developmental programs.
  15. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  16. Maintains current vocational information for pupils interested in professional careers and resource materials for those who plan to be homemakers.
  17. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
  18. Provide for student leadership, social and skill development activities utilizing a Career and Technical Student Organization, classroom instruction, and other cooperative school activities.
  19. Other duties may be assigned by the administrator.

 

Supervisory Duties 

Supervises students at all times.

 

Qualifications 

Education/Experience/Certificates

Bachelor's degree in vocational Family and Consumer Science Education and valid Missouri Teacher’s Certification; or alternative to these qualifications that the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Skills and Abilities  

Language 

Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures/forms, and government regulations and guidelines. Must be able to complete forms, write reports, and engage in written correspondence with parents. Must have the ability to write clearly and complete lesson plans.

Computation

The individual must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

Reasoning 

Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Must be able to apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students.

Technology

The individual must understand basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use. Will be using district software for recording grades and finding student information.

The individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously; must be able to move around the classroom; must be able to read handwritten and printed materials.

Conditions and Environment

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally, the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform tasks, such as loading and unloading buses.

 

Terms of Employment

183 days.  Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

 

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board

Policy on Evaluation of Certified Staff.
